Earlier this month, a young girl was abducted from her front yard and sexually assaulted. Miraculously, she was found two hours later by teenaged boys. The boys noticed a suspicious car with the girl in it and began following it on their bikes until the abductor let the girl out and drove off.
Last week, Lancaster law enforcement made an arrest in the case. According to a CBS News article, “Harold Herr, 73, arrested in abduction assault of 5 year old PA girl,” the man who abducted the girl was a registered sex offender. In 1990, he was convicted of Rape. He is now charged with kidnapping and sexual assault related charges.
Important Tip for Parents – Know the Sex Offenders in Your Neighborhood
Parents should be familiar with the registered sex offenders in their neighborhoods. The Pennsylvania State Police keeps an online registry of sex offenders which is searchable by county, city, zip code, mile radius, name, etc. Click here for the PA State Police sex offender registry (aka Megan’s Law registry). The website shows recent pictures of registered sex offenders as well as other important details, such as:
- last reported address,
- last reported place of employment, and
- registered vehicles.
You can also sign up to receive notifications any time a change is reported. For instance, you can sign up to receive email notifications any time a registered sex offender in your area moves or gets a new job.
It is very important for parents to discuss sex offenders in the immediate area with their appropriately aged children. Depending on the age and maturity of the child, parents should consider showing pictures of the sex offenders and also making their child aware of the registered vehicles. This can absolutely prevent abductions.
