A former history teacher at Cardinal McCarrick Catholic High School in New Jersey was arrested earlier this month for having sex with a student.
According to the Office of the Middlesex County Prosecutor, the 24 year old female teacher was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with a 17 year old student.
The alleged sexual relationship between the female teacher and student took place in May at the Catholic school, which was closed last month due to low enrollment and financial difficulties.
The police began their investigation after school officials notified the authorities. The investigation determined that the teacher had sex with the student on a number of occasions at the school between May 4th and May 30th, 2015. The investigation is still continuing.
This isn’t the first time this year a NJ female teacher was arrested and charged as a result of having sexual relations with a student. In fact, there have been several others. Probably one of the most recently publicized scandals involves a 35 year old female high school teacher accused of having sex with 6 of her male students, all ages 14 and 15. She was a language arts teacher for 9 years at the school prior to these incidents and a single mother to 2 young children.
The alleged sex acts took place between 2013 and 2014 at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ and inside her car. The female teacher was arrested in September of last year. When she was first arrested, there were only 3 victims identified. Later, 2 more victims were identified after the grand jury indictment. She was charged with 40 counts of aggravated sexual assault and child endangerment.
This past April, the teacher plead not guilty to all of the charges despite damaging evidence against her. The most incriminating evidence is a video of her performing oral sex on one of the boys while another victim was nearby. According to reports, however, her lawyer plans on a vigorous defense that may claim the teen boys as the aggressors.
Legal Rights of Victims of Sex Abuse
Ever since the Jerry Sandusky scandal, it seems that there are more and more reports of teachers having sexual relations with their students in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Victims of sex abuse have legal rights against their perpetrators. First, the perpetrators may be prosecuted in NJ criminal courts, as these above female teachers. In addition, the victims may pursue civil lawsuits against the teachers. In addition, if the schools or school employees had knowledge of the inappropriate sexual relations, they may also be sued in the civil lawsuits.
